Upon his brother’s urging, Howard Lord boarded a ship to transport cattle, sheep, mules, horses and chickens to Ethiopia and Greece in 1947. Young Howard left Wilma Russell, his fiancée, and his family in Grinnell, Iowa, for a seagoing cowboys trip that would change him forever.

“It was a total change of life; I was never the same,” he said. “I became so much more socially conscious…it was almost like starting life all over again.”

Soon after Lord returned home, he married Wilma and joined the seminary. The couple have been active Heifer supporters and volunteer leaders through the years.
